Highland Lighthouse Tours in North Truro MA

A visit to Cape Cod National Seashore isn’t complete until you’ve visited the historic Highland Light in North Truro. The 69-step climb up a narrow staircase rewards visitors with spectacular views of Cape Cod and beyond. On a clear day views extend more than 20 miles across the Atlantic Ocean and bay of Cape Cod. To ensure the safety of all visitors, the minimum height requirement to climb the lighthouse is 48″.Highland Lighthouse Tours in North Truro MA

History of the Lighthouse

Highland Light Station, also known as Cape Cod Light, is located on Outer Cape Cod within Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro. Commissioned by George Washington and established in 1797 as the 20th light station in the United States, the original 45-foot tall wooden tower and keeper’s dwelling were built more than 500 feet from the edge of a 125-foot-tall clay cliff. A new brick lighthouse was erected near the original tower in 1831. The present 66-foot-tall brick light tower, keeper’s house, and generator shed replaced the previous structures in 1857. An enclosed walkway connects the tower and the one-and-one-half-story, L-shaped, Queen-Anne-style keeper’s dwelling.

Erosion of the steep cliff throughout the years brought the present light station around 100 feet from the cliff’s edge by the early 1990s. Using funds raised by the Truro Historical Society combined with state and Federal grants, Highland Light Station was successfully moved 450 feet back to safer ground. After the 18-day move, the light was relit on November 3, 1996, and is an active aid to navigation. Today, the keeper’s house features a gift shop and museum exhibits and a dedicated staff provides tours of the tower.

Heralded as Cape Cod’s oldest golf course, perhaps its most scenic, the Highland Links in North Truro is one of America’s golf treasures, perched high along windswept bluffs overlooking the Atlantic next to the vintage Cape Cod Light.
Highland LinksFounded in 1892, Highland Links Golf Course has celebrated over a century of golf. More significant than its age is Highland’s heritage. Deep natural rough, Scotch broom, heath, non irrigated open fairways, and spectacular ocean views keep the course a genuine links, as close to the Scottish tradition found anywhere in the eastern United States. The original Highland House Golf Links was adjunct to an ocean hotel and cottage resort operated for years by Isaac Small of Truro and his family, who promoted the course as “2000 yards around… in attractiveness not equaled in the New England coast.” Francis Ouimet, the legendary U.S. amateur golfer, played an exhibition round here after its original sand greens were converted to grass. First laid out by Willard Small, Isaac’s son, a redesign was implemented in 1913 by New Yorker and frequent hotel guest J. Henry McKinley. By 1955 the links had been refurbished again by owner Hal Conklin. In the 1960’s, when Congress approved President Kennedy’s Cape Cod National Seashore Act, Highland Links became Federal property and is currently leased to Johnson Golf Management.

The first hole demands a drive over moors land: in the background are several FAA flight service domes, part of a former World War II Air Force surveillance station. Playing tip: #1 measures 250 yards, a relatively short par four. But don’t let the length fool you. It is a high risk/reward tee shot. A good drive will put you close to the green or on. The green is well protected by two green-side bunkers front and right. If you stray left or right, off the tee, you will find yourself in the deep fescue with a difficult 2nd shot. It’s your choice: a possible two, an easy three or a double bogy or worse depending on the drive.
