“I dove into Cape Cod ponds looking for a distraction from aging and found instead an entirely new relationship with the natural world.  For eighteen years I swam with pond turtles in all seasons and weathers to gather the skills and insights needed to see them as individuals like myself striving for a full life. Although moments of wonder pushed me from seeing nature as ‘things’ I can use to beings I can relate to, the old assumptions that we are isolated from and superior to nature got in the way.  Only after unlearning a big part of what I believed, could I see myself as part of Earth’s single, great community.  Entering a much larger world, I eventually founded the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG) to promote this transformation in others.”
